Willow Bark Health Benefits

What is Willow Bark?

Willow Bark Health Benefits Willow Bark is the outer shell of the Willow tree. It has been consumed medicinally by ancient Greek and Egyptian physicians for centuries. It was not until 1829 when scientists discovered its active ingredient salicin which has similar health effects as acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin), that the medicinal use of Willow Bark in ancient times was substantiated. It also contains tannins, glycosides, catechins and flavonoids. There are many types of Willow barks such as Crack Willow, Purple Willow (Salix purpurea), Violet Willow (Salix daphnoides), Black Willow (Salix nigra), Wheeping Willow, and European Willow or White Willow (Salix alba). However, among all these species of Willow, most commonly, bark of White Willow tree and occasionally Purple Willow and Crack Willow is used for therapeutic purposes. Studies suggest that analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity of Willow Bark shows its effects slowly but the effectiveness may last longer than aspirin. The salicin in Willow bark is converted into salicylic acid after it is absorbed by the stomach, therefore, it may not cause stomach irritation like aspirin and can be a great option for treating minor to severe ailments.

What are the Benefits of Willow Bark?

Studies and researches identify that Willow Bark has anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, antiseptic, anti-oxidant, analgesic, and immune boosting capability. Therefore, it has been used in the treatment of a number of minor to severe ailments such as headache, toothache, backache, osteoarthritis, PMS, menstrual cramps, muscular pains and strains, cardiovascular disorders, cuts, wounds, burns, colds, flu, fever, and rheumatory and inflammatory disorders, i.e. bursitis, arthritis, painful articular (joint) conditions, carpal tunnel syndrome and tendinitis. Due to its nutritional and healing properties many European countries (Germany, France, England) have approved Willow Bark for pain and rheumatic conditions. Also its extract has been approved by the European Scientific Cooperative on Phytotherapy (ESCOP) to be used in the treatment of mild rheumatic disorders, pain and fever.

Uses of Willow Bark

Back Ache

A study designed to examine the anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity of Willow Bark found that patients suffering from Back Ache who took willow bark capsules with 225mg to 240mg of salicin were relieved from back ache within 3 weeks of its regular consumption. Therefore, regular consumption of Willow Bark extract that contains 225mg to 240mg of salicin may be beneficial for back, neck and muscle pains.

Fever

White Willow Bark has long been used in the treatment of fever associated with cold and flu. Taking one capsule of Willow Bark twice daily may help with mild fevers related to cold and flu. Or drinking one cup of Willow Bark tea 2-3 times daily may be beneficial.

Heart Attacks

Studies suggest that taking small amount of aspirin may reduce the risk of internal clotting and hence can play a significant role in reducing the stroke and heart attack risks. Therefore, by drinking one cup of White Willow Bark tea once or twice daily, aspirin like activity of the bark may reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in people high at risk.

Migraines

Studies have shown that low dose aspirin may help reduce the migraine headache attacks. Simply drinking one cup of Willow Bark tea regularly may be beneficial for Migraine headaches.

Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis

A German study shows that people with osteoarthritis who took Willow Bark extract providing 240mg of salicin for two weeks had 14% reduced pain levels. Therefore, for people who have mild to medium rheumatic disorders and are at risk of Osteoarthritis, taking 240mg of White Willow Bark extract regularly can suppress the progression and onset of the disease.

PMS and Menstrual Cramps

Menstrual Cramps are usually caused by the inflammation of uterine lining and contractions induced by a hormone like chemical prostaglandins. Studies suggest that natural components of Willow Bark may help with Menstrual Cramps and PMS symptoms by regulating the production of prostaglandins and reducing the inflammation. Simply drink one cup of Willow Bark tea two to three times daily starting a couple of days before the start of menstrual cycle. It may also help alleviate back ache, headache and legs pain associated with menses. To make Willow Bark tea simply soak one teaspoon of ground White Willow Bark in a cold cup of water for eight hours. Strain out the tea and add honey or sugar to minimize the bitter taste. Willow Bark can be refrigerated for no more than 48 hours since it loses its effectiveness when kept for longer hours.

Toothache

The anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity of Willow Bark may help with toothache. Simply, chew on a small piece of White Willow Bark or rub its powder on to the affected area. Drinking Willow Bark tea may add to the effectiveness of the herb. For inflamed gums gargling with Willow Bark tea every night before going to bed may be beneficial.

What are the Side Effects of Willow Bark?

Willow Bark should be avoided if you are allergic to aspirin since both of them share the same key ingredient- salicin. It is not recommended for nursing and pregnant mothers, people with chronic ulcers, Crohn's disease, colitis, kidney disease, and asthma as well as for children under 16 since it may cause Rye's Syndrome in them. The over dose of Willow Bark may cause similar problems as the overdose of Aspirin does, however, its effects seem to be milder than the Aspirin. Willow Bark's over dose may cause skin rash, stomach irritation, kidney inflammation, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, tinnitus/ringing in the ears. If you are taking herbs such as Ginkgo and Garlic, or any Diuretics, Platelet Inhibitors, Anticoagulants or are on any medication that contains Bismuth Subsalicylates, Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDS), Metoclopramide, and Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, you should not take Willow Bark in any form.

Where and How to Buy Willow Bark

Willow Bark is available in herbal food stores in the form of dry bark pieces, extracts, pills, capsules, powders, tinctures and teas. When buying Willow Bark, make sure that it is produced by a reliable and well reputed company. Most commonly, White Willow Bark is used for therapeutic purposes. In order to regulate daily dosage of the herb, usually Willow Bark extracts or capsules are suggested.

However, it should not be applied on seriously ruptured skin.

Hemorrhoids

A few studies show that the Flavonoids, Tannins and other chemicals in Witch Hazel may help in tightening, constricting and healing of the distressed and damaged blood vessels responsible for causing hemorrhoids. A simple home remedy is to make Witch Hazel tea by boiling one teaspoon of Witch Hazel in one cup for 15-20 minutes or until water is reduced to 1/4 cup. Take a couple of round cotton balls no bigger than a walnut in size or a few small squares made with 3-4 layers of cotton gauze or clean unbleached cotton cloth. Dab one piece of cotton ball or cotton cloth in lukewarm Witch Hazel tea and apply it for 2-3 minutes onto the hemorrhoids and then replace it with a new and fresh piece. Repeat the process for 10-15 minutes after every bowel movement and at night before going to bed. By repeating it at regular intervals the anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties of Which Hazel may reduce the swelling in a few days. Note that the tea can be replaced with Witch Hazel non-alcoholic water which is available at most herbal food stores. If your hemorrhoids are due to constipation, it is also important to consume plenty of fiber and drink at least 6-8 glasses of water per day to help soften the stools.

Post-natal Tearing (or Episiotomy) of the Perineum

The anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties of Witch Hazel oil may help heal and relieve the pain and inflammation caused by the tearing or episiotomy after birth. Simply put a few drops of the oil onto a sanitary pad before applying it over the perineum area. You can also fill a peri-bottle (squirt bottle) with a glass of lukewarm water and add 5-6 drops of Witch Hazel oil in it. Mix it well and use this water as a rinse after urination and defecation to cleanse and avoid any bacterial infection and inflammation. Pat dry or air dry the perineum area.

Varicose Veins

A few studies have found that Witch Hazel contains polyphenols and other important herbal and chemical components which may help with swollen and knotty Varicose Veins and damaged blood vessels under the skin. Simply soak a wash cloth in a solution made by mixing 10-15 drops of Witch Hazel extract into a cup of lukewarm water and apply it over the affected area. While applying the soak, keep your legs flat on a straight surface. Repeat this process 2-3 times daily for 10-15 minutes especially before going to bed. After the soak, Witch Hazel mixed in equal amount of Horse Chestnut oil may be applied to enhance its effectiveness. Also wearing support stockings can be helpful. However, any kind of massage or applying of pressure is not recommended for Varicose Veins.

Diaper Rash

A simple home remedy to treat Gingivitis, Laryngitis and sore throat is to make a tea by boiling one teaspoon of Witch Hazel in one cup of boiling water for about 10 minutes. Or mix 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of Witch Hazel extract and 2-3 drops of Clove Oil in a lukewarm cup of water. Use this concoction for gargling and as a mouth wash 3-4 times daily.

Sprains and Bruises

Witch Hazel is considered a wonderful topical home remedy for treating bruises, inflamed and painful joints, and sprains. Simply apply Witch Hazel oil following the directions on the package onto the affected area daily. At night, put a few drops of the oil on a piece of cotton strip and wrap it around the sprained or inflamed joint overnight.

Diarrhea and Dysentery

Witch Hazel tea made in combination with these herbs has shown to be beneficial in the treatment of Diarrhea, Stomach Flu, Colitis or Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Dysentery and other intestinal illnesses. To relieve the discomfort caused by these intestinal conditions, make a tea by adding 1 tbsp each of dried Chamomile, Mint, Witch Hazel and Thyme to a boiling quart of water. Let it simmer for 5-7 minutes and sip one cup throughout the day. The rest of the tea can be refrigerated for a few days. If all the other ingredients are not available, a simpler tea can be made using only one teaspoon of Witch Hazel mixed into a cup of boiling water and simmered for 5-7 minutes.

What are the Side Effects of Witch Hazel?

In the USA, Witch Hazel is an FDA approved herbal product for medicinal purposes. There are not any known severe side effects of using this herb. However, oral overdose of Witch Hazel may cause allergic reactions such as rash, itchiness or inflammation, trouble breathing, dizziness, nausea or upset stomach. Therefore, oral consumption should be done only under close supervision of your health care provider and if you feel any kind of adverse symptoms, contact your physician immediately. Turmeric Health Benefits

What is Turmeric?

Turmeric Health Benefits Turmeric is a perennial plant of the ginger family, and its mustard yellow powder is commonly used as a culinary spice in South Asia. However, Turmeric also has an active medicinal ingredient called Curcumin which has many anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and anti-bacterial properties.

What are the Benefits of Turmeric?

The health benefits of Turmeric have been recognized by Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine for hundreds of years. It has been used to treat everyday problems such as indigestion and flatulence, as well as more serious problems such as arthritis, Alzheimer's disease, cancer, diabetes, HIV, high cholesterol, heartburn, jaundice, liver disorders, and menstrual disorders. Turmeric can also be applied topically in poultices to reduce inflammation and to relieve wounds, cuts, and bruises.

Uses of Turmeric

Alzheimer's Disease

Inflammation inside of the brain has been suspected to be one of the contributing factors in the development of Alzheimer's disease. Studies have shown that Turmeric has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant activity. Therefore, regular daily consumption of Turmeric capsules may be an effective way to prevent the onset of Alzheimer's.

Arthritis

Due to its anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties, it is not surprising that Turmeric is now being used as an effective natural remedy for Arthritis pain. Therefore, taking 500mg to 1000mg Turmeric capsules three times per day may provide significant relief from osteoarthritis pain.

Asthma

Since turmeric is an anti-inflammatory, it can help reduce the inflammation associated with asthma. Add 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder to a glass of warm milk, and drink this mixture as an effective asthma home remedy.

Cancer

Several recent studies have found that Turmeric can induce apoptosis, a process that triggers the self-destruction and elimination of damaged (cancerous) cells. Further research is still required before the full effects of Turmeric on cancer cells can be determined. However, existing studies suggest that daily Turmeric powder or supplements combined with a balanced, nutritious diet may help prevent or even destroy cancer cells.

Colds and Flu

Turmeric's anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal agents can help our body fight against colds, cough and flu. Therefore, when symptoms of these infections are present, simply mix one teaspoon of Turmeric powder into a glass of warm milk once per day. Also drink plenty of water throughout the day.

Diabetes

Recent studies have shown that the antioxidant agents in Turmeric help reduce insulin resistance, which may prevent the onset of Type-2 Diabetes. Therefore, a simple preventive remedy is to take one teaspoon of turmeric powder twice a day with meals. Curcumin extracts or capsules can also be used as an alternative to the powder.

Inflammation

Turmeric's key ingredient Curcumin is known for its anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Therefore, Turmeric powder can help in healing cuts, wounds, and other skin infections including boils.
  • Heat one cup of Flax Seed Oil in a small saucepan on the stove.
  • Thinly slice a small onion and add it to the hot oil.
  • Fry the onions until they are dark brown and crunchy.
  • Remove the brown onions and mix 2 tablespoons of Turmeric powder into the oil.
  • Turn off the stove and let the oil cool down to a temperature that is comfortable to touch.
  • Using a cotton swab, apply a small amount of the oil onto the injured or infected skin area.
  • Apply this three times per day until the wound or infection is cured.
  • Save the remaining oil into an airtight container for future use.
For internal injuries, fractures, sprains, and herniated disks, dip a piece of unbleached cotton fabric into the warm Turmeric oil. The fabric or cotton pad should be large enough to cover the outer skin of the affected area. Secure it in place and leave this cotton pad on overnight.
You can also add one teaspoon of turmeric powder into a warm glass of milk and drink it before going to bed to prevent internal inflammation and infections.

Weight Loss

Curcumin in Turmeric powder has been found to help increase the flow of bile, an important component in the breakdown of dietary fat. Therefore, taking one teaspoon of Turmeric powder with every meal may be an effective weight loss aid when combined with a healthy diet and exercise program.

What are the Side Effects of Turmeric?

Moderate use of Turmeric powder as part of regular diet is fairly safe, and recent studies have found that a dosage of 500mg capsules of Turmeric three times per day is safe. However, prolonged consumption of high doses of Turmeric extract may cause stomach or liver distress, as well as dehydration and constipation. Therefore, it should be avoided by people with gallstones or bile obstructions. If you are currently taking blood thinners (including Aspirin), you should consult your doctor before taking Turmeric since it is an anti-platelet (prevents blood clots).

Where and How to Buy Turmeric

Turmeric powder can be purchased at many Indian/Pakistani grocery stores. However, Curcumin concentrations can be up to 18 times higher in capsules and tablets compared to powdered Turmeric spice. Therefore, Turmeric supplements which can be found in many natural or health food stores are recommended for maximal health benefits.

Uses of St. John's Wort

Anxiety, Depression, and Mood Swings

Studies suggest that St. John's Wort has significant amounts of hyperforin and hypericin which may raise the release of neurotransmitters (dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin) that modulate brain signals between cells and play an important role in the optimal functionality of our nervous system. Hypericin in St. John's Wort may also be capable of inhibiting a bodily chemical, monoamine oxidase, which is associated with anxiety and depression. As a result, this herb may induce the sense of well being which can help with mild to moderate depression, mood swings, wintertime blues, low energy levels, and chronic fatigue.

A common recommendation is to take one capsule of St. John's extract of 300mg three times daily with meals while symptoms exist. However, it is recommended to consult your doctor before taking it, particularly if you are taking any other anti-depressants.

Hangovers and Alcoholism

Researchers believe that the potent component of St. John's Wort, hyperforin, may help treat hangovers and alcoholism. Therefore, a tea made with the flowering tops of St. John's Wort may be effective.

To make St. John's Wort tea take a teabag (or one tablespoon of the flowers) and add it to a cup of boiling water. Let it simmer for about 5 minutes and strain the tea, and then add honey as a natural sweetener. To combat alcoholism, drink one cup of this tea after breakfast and dinner everyday for about 4 to 6 weeks. For relief of hangover symptoms, drink this tea two to three times throughout the day. The tea can be replaced with one daily capsule of 300 mg of St. John's Wort extract.

Parkinson's Disease

It is believed that a dopamine dysfunction is one of the causes of Parkinson's disease and schizophrenia. Some studies suggest that St. John's Wort may raise the levels of the neurotransmitter dopamine. Studies also suggest that antioxidant activity of the herb may help with neural degeneration associated with the onset of Parkinson's disease. However, further studies are required to prove the extent of effectiveness of the herb. However, simply drinking one cup of St. John's Wort tea or one capsule of its extract regularly with a meal may inhibit the development of Parkinson's disease in people at risk of developing it.

Sinus Congestion and Chronic Coughing

St. John's Wort has antibiotic and antiviral activity that may help relieve phlegm congestion, sinus infection, flu and bronchitis symptoms. Simply drinking one cup of St. John's Wort tea after breakfast and dinner may help alleviate the throat and sinus problems. To make St. John's Wort tea, simply soak in a tea bag into a cup of boiling water and let it steep for 5 minutes. Add honey or sugar for sweetness if desired.

Wounds and Bruises

St. John's Wort has antibacterial and analgesic activity. Therefore, a balm, oil, or poultice made with St. John's Wort flowers and leaves may help heal cuts, wounds, insect bites, boils, and bruises. St. John's Wort oil can be made by frying 1/2 cup of dried flowers and leaves of the herb in 2 tbsp of mustard oil. Leave the flowers and leaves in the oil and let the mixture cool down. Then add 1/3 cup of Extra Virgin Olive Oil to the prepared St. John's Wort oil. Apply it 3-4 times on a wound throughout the day. The prepared oil can be stored in an air tight container in a cool and dark place for emergency use.

What are the Side Effects of St. John's Wort?

It has been reported that St. John's Wort may interact with other drugs or its overdose may cause some side effects such as dry mouth, headache, restlessness, confusion, dizziness, upset stomach, sexual dysfunction, and photosensitivity. Therefore, it is recommended to consult your physician prior to consuming this herb, particularly if you are being treated for depression, cancer, HIV infection, heart disease or taking blood thinner (such as Digoxin or Warfarin), or birth control pills.

Do not take St. John's Wort if you are pregnant.

Some individuals may be allergic to St. John's Wort, so it is important to contact your doctor if any unexplainable symptoms appear when taking this herb.

To prevent photosensitivity, it is advised to wear a quality sunblock before going out in the sun while taking St. John's Wort supplements.

Studies have also found that the hypericum content in St. John's Wort has tannic acid, which can interfere with the body's ability to absorb iron. Therefore, taking iron supplements daily during the regular consumption of St. John's Wort is recommended.

Where and How to Buy St. John's Wort

St. John's Wort can be purchased at most herbal food stores in the form of dried flowers, tablets, capsules, extracts, teabags and tinctures. When buying St. John's Wort Extract, look for one that is extracted from flowers of the herb and has at least 0.3% of hypericin.

It is also known as Eupatorium rebaudianum, sweetleaf, honeyleaf and sugarleaf, and sweet herb of Paraguay. The leaves of Stevia are a source of natural zero-calorie sweetener which is considered sweeter than sugar (sucrose). It has been used in South and Central America , Japan and many other parts of the world as a sugar substitute and in the treatment of a number of health conditions for centuries. Initially the leaves of Stevia were consumed fresh or dried but eventually chemists isolated the glycosides called stevioside and rebaudioside from its leaves that give stevia its sweet taste. Stevia also contains phytonutrients, trace elements, minerals, vitamins and volatile oils which give Stevia its nutritional and medicinal properties. In 2008, FDA (The Food and Drug Administration) approved sweetener derived from the herb stevia as safe for use in foods and beverages. The steviols glycosides are now used in herbal supplements, foods and beverages, and as sweetening powders and syrups. Unlike other sweeteners, Stevia can be used in baking and cooking and its lesser amount is ample.

What are the Benefits of Stevia?

A number of studies show that Stevia can be beneficial in the treatment of many health conditions. Osteoporosis

A study performed on chickens shows that by adding Stevia leaf powder to chicken feed it significantly increased calcium metabolism in the chickens and had 75% decreased eggshell breakage. A patent application for possible Osteoporosis treatment with Stevia suggests that stevia may help promote absorption of calcium in the body and help improve bone density. Suggested remedy is to make Alfalfa and stevia tea by steeping Alfalfa herb and Stevia half teaspoon each for 5-7 minutes. Drink it two to three times daily. Adding vitamin D powder to the tea or taking its supplements can be beneficial too.

Weight Loss

Recent medical research suggests that low at carbohydrates, calories and sugar Stevia may be beneficial in weight management. One preliminary research suggests that Stevia may interfere with the functions of hypothalamus and may aid weight loss by curbing the hunger sensation. Hypothalamus is a part of the brain which controls hunger, thirst and fatigue along with its other functions. Anti-glycemic activity of Stevia may also control blood glucose levels which is one of the major causes of weight gain. Stevia works as a tonic to increase energy levels in people battling for weight loss. Suggested remedy is to drink one cup of Stevia tea or mix 10-15 drops of Stevia concentrate in one cup of cold or warm water. Drink it 15 minutes before every meal.

Wrinkles and Other Skin Conditions

Stevia is believed to be a remarkable healing agent for skin disorders. Its antioxidant, antibacterial and antiseptic activity may help with wrinkles, skin blemishes, dermatitis, eczema, acne outbreaks, scarring, rashes, itchiness and chapped lips. A small amount of Stevia concentrate applied directly onto the affected skin may promote the healing process. To smooth out the wrinkles, before going to bed, apply a paste made by crushed Stevia leaves or its liquid concentrate evenly all over the face and let it dry for fifteen to twenty minutes. Wash and pat dry your face and apply a few drops of extra virgin coconut oil on the face and leave it on over night to benefit from its antioxidant effects.

What are the Side Effects of Stevia?

There are not any reported side effects of Stevia when taken in moderation. Based on intensive global researches and scientific reports, The World Health Organisation (WHO) of the UN and Food and Drug Administration of the US had approved the use of Steviol glycosides as safe and has established an acceptable daily intake of 4mg per kg of body weight. However, if you are taking any medication for diabetes or hypertension, due to its anti-glycemic and anti-hypertensive activity supervised Stevia consumption is advised. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your physician before using Stevia therapeutically.

Where and How to Buy Stevia

Stevia is available at organic grocery and herbal food stores in the form of raw dried leaves, white or green powder, sugar tabs, granulated or crystalline sugar, concentrate, and flavoured and nonflavourd liquids. When buying Stevia look for Stevia rebaudiana because it is considered the best type and the FDA approved steviol glycosides are extracted from this genus in the whole Stevia family.

Rosemary Health Benefits and Remedies

What is Rosemary?

Rosemary Health Benefits and Remedies Rosemary is an aromatic, evergreen perennial herb that is part of the mint family. It has needle-like leaves and is also known as Rosmarinus Officinalis and Anthos. It is native to the Mediterranean region and has been used in cooking, soaps, fragrances, cosmetics, and herbal remedies for centuries. It is also known as a symbol of love and traditionally its sprigs are used in wedding ceremonies. Studies have found that it is rich in a number of components such as calcium, potassium, magnesium, iron, vitamin C, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, thiamin, niacin, riboflavin, protein and dietary fiber which may explain its long history of medicinal use. It also contains carnosic acid which is known to promote cognitive performance and eye health.

What are the Health Benefits of Rosemary?

Rosemary has been used in the treatment of many health conditions for centuries. Studies suggest that Rosemary may have anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antimicrobial, antiseptic, anticarcinogenic, and antioxidant activity. Therefore, it may help with digestive tract problems, headaches, respiratory conditions, bad breath, body odor, baldness, Oedema (fluid retention), neurological and cognitive problems, macular degeneration, poor blood circulation, and arthritis. A few preliminary results suggest that it may also relieve muscle pain, increase menstrual flow, promote urine flow, prevent thrombosis or blood clots, and improve hair growth.

Health Uses of Rosemary

Indigestion

Studies show that the antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties of rosemary may help with indigestion and gastrointestinal infections. In fact, in Germany, rosemary has been approved as a safe and effective herb for treating dyspepsia (impaired digestion). Therefore, drinking Rosemary tea three times daily at the onset of indigestion, mild food poisoning, diarrhea, and vomiting may help soothe your digestive tract and relax the stomach. To make Rosemary tea, simply boil one to two stems of Rosemary in a cup of water for 5 minutes, strain the stems and add sugar or honey for taste.

Migraine Headaches

Aromatherapy with rosemary is an effective remedy for migraine headaches. Studies have found that the soothing and stimulating properties of Rosemary may help relieve stress related headaches by promoting blood circulation in the brain and by lowering levels of the stress hormone cortisol. An effective home remedy for headaches and migraines is to inhale the vapours of rosemary. Simply boil five or six fresh Rosemary stems or add five to six drops of the essential oil into a medium size pot of water. Once the water comes to a boil, place a towel over your head and inhale the steam from the boiling pot by breathing deeply and slowly for about 10 minutes.

Anxiety and Stress

As mentioned earlier, Rosemary may help lower cortisol - the stress hormone. Studies show that using rosemary may help increase concentration and help with symptoms of anxiety and stress. Therefore, drinking one cup of Rosemary tea daily may help keep you calm and relaxed. In one study, aromatherapy using Rosemary and Lavender essential oil sachets showed significantly reduced stress levels in students before an exam. To make Rosemary sachets, simply put a few drops of the essential oil on 4-5 small cotton balls and tie them in a small 6 inch by 6 inch piece of thin cotton or burlap fabric or put the cotton balls in a small ready-made fabric sachet. Simply keeping the sachet beside you while working or sleeping may help reduce stress and anxiety.

Improving Memory and Cognitive Performance

Research suggests that Rosemary contains an ingredient, carnosic acid, that has antioxidant and neuroprotective properties which may control free radical damage in the brain. Rosemary also improves blood circulation, and better blood circulation in the brain promotes the overall health of the brain. Therefore, drinking one cup of tea made with 3-4 stems of Rosemary or taking one capsule of Rosemary extract with carnosic acid (CA) daily may help protect against Alzheimer's disease and memory loss and improve cognitive performance.

Weight Loss

A study done on rats at the National Institute of Health, Maryland, found that long term use of Rosemary extract (which is rich in carnosic acid) may moderate weight gain and improve the plasma lipids profile. The study also noticed a significant reduction in serum triglycerides and cholesterol levels. Therefore, drinking 1-3 cups of Rosemary tea or taking one capsule of Rosemary extract daily may promote weight loss.

Bad Breath

Due to the aromatic, antibacterial and antiseptic properties of Rosemary, it can effectively be used as a mouthwash for bad breath caused by gingivitis or oral bacteria. To make Rosemary mouthwash, simply boil 5 to 6 stems of fresh Rosemary in a litre of water for 10-15 minutes. Let it cool and then strain the water into an airtight bottle. This organic Rosemary mouthwash can be refrigerated for up to a week. Using Rosemary mouthwash, at least three times daily, may help eliminate bad breath.

Body Odor

Studies show that the antiseptic and aromatic properties of Rosemary may help reduce body odor. A simple body odor remedy is to boil 10-15 stems of Rosemary in a quart of water and mix it into your bath water each day to provide a fresh body scent as well as for relaxation purposes. A simpler alternative is to add 10 drops of Rosemary essential oil to your bath water instead of using fresh stems.

Improving Eyesight

A study done at Sanford-burnham Medical Research Institute concluded that a key ingredient in Rosemary, carnosic acid, may significantly improve eye health. A few clinical studies also suggest that Rosemary extract may help with age-related eyesight loss and other eye conditions that affect the outer retina and cause macular degeneration. Therefore, simply drinking Rosemary tea 1-2 times daily or taking one capsule of Rosemary extract daily may help improve the health of your eyes.

Anti-Aging Remedy

Antioxidants help neutralize the free radicals which damage cell membranes and lead to cell death. Studies show that the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity of Rosemary may help stimulate cell regeneration, which in turn reduces skin puffiness and rejuvenates the look of aging skin. For this reason, it is not surprising that Rosemary has been used in anti-aging remedies for centuries and can be found in many modern day anti-aging products. A simple home remedy for improving the look of aging skin is to drink a cup of Rosemary tea once daily. This same tea can also be cooled and applied to your hands and face with a cotton pad overnight to stimulate blood circulation and refresh and rejuvenate aging skin.

Congestion and Respiratory Conditions

Due to the healing properties of Rosemary, it has been used for centuries in the treatment of respiratory conditions such as sinusitis, laryngitis, nasal congestion, headaches caused by allergies, and colds. Drinking Rosemary tea 2-3 times daily and inhaling Rosemary essential oil vapours may help alleviate the symptoms of these respiratory conditions. To make Rosemary tea, simply strip the needles of one stem of Rosemary and put them in a cup of boiling water. Let it simmer for about 5 minutes and add honey for taste. For Rosemary aromatherapy to clear congestion, boil 5-6 stems of fresh Rosemary in a big pot of water and cover your head with a towel and inhale the steam slowly for 10-15 minutes. Rosemary essential oil can also be used in a diffuser to treat respiratory conditions.

Hair Loss

Poor blood circulation in the scalp may be a cause of hair loss. Since rosemary is known to promote blood circulation, it may help stimulate hair growth. A study suggests that mixing one drop each of rosemary, lavender, thyme, and cedarwood essential oils together and massaging the mixture into the scalp once per day for seven months may help prevent hair loss. If you have sensitive skin, this mix of essential oils can be added to one tablespoon of cold pressed almond or coconut oil before massaging.

Arthritis

Studies show that oral and topical use of Rosemary may help treat symptoms of arthritis. Rosemary contains carnosol and carnosic acid which, according to a study, may help inhibit the inflammatory process and may help treat sore and painful muscles and joints. Drinking Rosemary tea twice daily and applying Rosemary essential oil onto sore and inflamed muscles and joints before going to bed every night has appeared to be an effective home remedy for many people suffering from arthritis. For sensitive skin, 10 -15 drops of essential oil can be diluted in a teaspoon of organic coconut or olive oil before applying.

Side Effects of Rosemary

Rosemary has been used in culinary dishes for years without any reported adverse side effects. However, from a medicinal perspective, an overdose of rosemary leaves or its extract may cause vomiting, muscle spasms, and in some cases pulmonary edema or coma. Therefore, dried rosemary should not be consumed in quantities of more than 4-6 grams per day and rosemary essential oil should never be taken orally. The therapeutic use of rosemary is not recommended for pregnant women. It is also not recommended for patients who are taking medication for high blood pressure, epilepsy, or diabetes, or any type of anticoagulants, antidepressants, or diuretics since rosemary may affect the activity of these medications. It is important to consult your physician before using rosemary products in a medicinal capacity if you are taking any medication or are pregnant.

Where and How to Buy Rosemary

Rosemary is available in many forms at grocery and herbal food stores. It can be found in fresh or dried plant form, as well as in capsules, alcohol tincture, essential oil, liquid extract, and tea forms. Fresh rosemary can be purchased at most major grocery stores. When buying fresh, make sure that the stems don't have any yellow or dark spots and are deep sage in color. When buying in dried, oil, or other forms, choose products which are made with organically grown, pesticide free and nonirradiated rosemary leaves. For a better taste and more herbal benefits, choose fresh rosemary instead of the dried variety.

Psyllium Health Benefits

What is Psyllium?

Psyllium Health Benefits Psyllium (also known as Ispaghula) is the name that is often used to describe a plant called Plantago. The outer shell of the seeds from this plant (called the husk) is often ground to extract a clear, glue-like substance called mucilage. It is this mucilage that contains a high-level of soluble fiber and other beneficial components which are often used to treat a variety of ailments.

What are the Benefits of Psyllium?

Studies have found that Psyllium is beneficial in the treatment of a variety of health conditions. In fact, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has even approved advertisers and food packagers from stating that Psyllium is an effective ingredient to lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease. Many people have also found Psyllium to be effective when treating:
  • Bleeding hemorrhoids
  • Boils
  • Bronchitis
  • Colon cancer
  • Crohn's Disease
  • Dysentery
  • Gallstones
  • High blood pressure
  • Incontinence
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
  • Poison ivy rash
  • Psoriasis
  • Stings and insect bites
  • Ulcers

Uses of Psyllium

Constipation

Psyllium is a common ingredient in many over-the-counter constipation products, since it is a high source of fiber and it acts as a bulk-forming laxative. In other words, it helps increase the volume of fecal matter, which stimulates a reflex contraction of the bowel walls that helps the stool pass smoothly.

For mild constipation, a recommendation is to take 1 teaspoon of psyllium in a glass of juice, warm water, or milk three times a day. For moderate to severe constipation, use 2 teaspoons (instead of one). It is recommended to drink the mixture immediately before it thickens up and becomes harder to swallow. It is also very important to drink an additional 8 ounce glass of water immediately afterwards, as well as another 6 to 8 glasses of water throughout the remainder of the day.

Diabetes

Studies suggest that the various constituents of psyllium (such as soluble fibers, linoleic acid, and alkaloids) can help lower blood sugar levels. Therefore, a simple remedy to treat Diabetes is to take 1 tablespoon of Psyllium mixed into a glass of water or apple juice twice per day. It is also important to drink plenty of water throughout the day.

Diarrhea

Psyllium's properties help to soak up a significant amount of excess water in the digestive tract and make stool firmer. Therefore, it is an effective natural remedy for diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease. Simply take 1-2 tbsp (5-10 grams) of Psyllium husk 2-3 times daily until bowel movements are normal.

Hemorrhoids

Since Psyllium is known to help soften stool, it is an effective way to reduce the pain and discomfort associated with hemorrhoids. Take 1 teaspoon of psyllium husk mixed in a warm glass of water or milk twice daily. It is recommended to drink 6-8 glasses of fluids throughout the day when using this Psyllium husk remedy.

High Cholesterol

Psyllium is well studied as a lipid-lowering agent. The high levels of soluble fiber and linoleic acid in Psyllium stimulate the production of cholesterol-lowering bile acids and reduce the amount of cholesterol absorption by the body. Therefore, a simple remedy for high cholesterol is to take 1 teaspoon of Psyllium husk 3 times a day. It is recommended to drink lots of fluids when using this remedy.

Weight Loss

Many dietitians believe that incorporating psyllium and other sources of fiber into the diet can help people lose weight faster. This is possible since psyllium can cause a feeling of fullness, which can reduce our sensation of hunger. Therefore, adding 1 teaspoon of psyllium to a glass of water or apple juice before each meal may be an effective way to increase weight loss. Be sure to drink at least 6-8 glasses of water throughout the day when using this remedy, and combine it with a regular daily exercise routine.

What are the Side Effects of Psyllium?

It is recommended to talk to your doctor before taking psyllium if you are currently taking medications for diabetes or cholesterol. Do not take psyllium if you have swallowing problems, intestinal obstructions, or have recently undergone bowel surgery.

Psyllium doesn't have any known side effects if consumed moderately with plenty of water. However, some people may be allergic to psyllium, so if you notice any rash, hives, itchiness or swollen skin, stop the use of Psyllium husk and consult your physician.

If you are taking any other medication, it is recommended to take Psyllium at least one hour after the medication. This is important since the thick mucilage formed by psyllium may engulf the medication, which significantly reduces the medication's effectiveness.

Where and How to Buy Psyllium

Psyllium husk can be purchased at natural health food and bulk food stores. If you are buying packaged psyllium make sure to choose a product that does not have added sugar, maltodextrin, or any other types of artificial sweeteners.

Passionflower Health Benefits and Remedies

What is Passionflower?

Passionflower Health Benefits and Remedies Passionflower is a plant in the Passifloraceae family. It is also known by a number of other names including Passion Vine, Water Lemon, Granadilla, Apricot Vine, Maypop, Jamaican Honeysuckle, Passionsblume Kraut and Maracuja. There are roughly 500 species of Passionflower, most of which grow as vines, shrubs, or herbaceous plants. What makes the plant interesting is that it is rich in flavonoids, glycosides, organic acids (i.e. formic, butyric, linoleic, linolenic, malic, myristic, oleic and palmitic acids), phenolic compounds, and amino acids. For this reason, it is not surprising that Passionflower has been used for centuries to treat many health conditions. The food and beverage industry also uses extract from the plant for flavouring purposes.

What are the Health Benefits of Passionflower?

From a health perspective, Passionflower is known for its antibacterial, antifungal, and analgesic properties. It also has sedative, anxiolytic and antispasmodic activity, which is why it has traditionally been used as a calming herb for the treatment of anxiety, nervousness, agitation, sleep disorders (insomnia), and seizures. Recent studies by herbalists also suggest that Passionflower may help with conditions such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Hysteria, Asthma, High Blood Pressure, Gastrointestinal discomfort, Menopausal and Postpartum depression symptoms, Fibromyalgia, muscle spasms, hemorrhoids, burns, and inflammation. It has also been used to relieve the symptoms caused by narcotic drugs or alcohol withdrawal.

Uses of Passionflower

Anxiety

Passionflower is well known for its calming activity. It contains beta-carboline harmala alkaloids that help reduce the amount of MAO (Monoamine Oxidase). This in turn helps treat anxiety and depression, as well as nervous restlessness. Therefore, drinking a cup of tea made with 1 teaspoon of fresh or dried leaves of Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata/maypop) or its tea bag may help with anxiety, nervousness, agitation, epilepsy and seizures. Simply steep the tea bag or one tablespoon of fresh or dried leaves of Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) in one cup of boiling water for 7-10 minutes and drink it when it reaches a suitable temperature.

Sleep Disorders

Humans have been using Passionflower to treat sleep disorders for centuries. Scientists believe that Passionflower helps increase the levels of an amino acid called GABA (Gamma-Amino Butyric Acid) in the brain which acts as a neurotransmitter. Research indicates that increased levels of GABA in the brain make us feel more calm and relaxed by reducing the production of excitatory neurotransmitters which lead to anxiety-induced sleep disorders. Therefore, drinking a cup of Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) tea about one hour before bedtime may improve sleep quality.

Burns, Inflammation, and Pain

Passionflower is known for its analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity. Therefore applying a passionflower tea bag onto an area of the body that has a minor burn, inflammation, or pain may help relieve discomfort. Simply soak an organic Passionflower tea bag in a very small amount of warm water and let the tea bag absorb that water for about five minutes. Apply that soaked tea bag onto the affected area for 10-15 minutes two to three times daily.

Gastrointestinal Discomfort

Passionflower tea is an effective natural remedy for stomach problems such as indigestion or an upset stomach. Simply drink one cup of Passionflower tea at the onset of minor gastrointestinal discomfort twice daily. If the stomach discomfort is not relieved within three days, it is best to consult your physician to make sure there isn't some more serious issue.

High Blood Pressure

For individuals that have mild levels of hypertension but otherwise maintain a healthy lifestyle consisting of a good diet and regular exercise, drinking one cup of Passionflower tea daily has been shown to be beneficial in regulating blood pressure levels. Note that individuals who are taking medication for high blood pressure should avoid this passionflower tea remedy since it may cause blood pressure levels to fall to dangerously low levels.

Side Effects of Passionflower

Passionflower is generally safe when taken moderately and for a short duration of no more than two months continuously. To use it beyond two months, it is recommended that it be discontinued for two to three weeks before continuing usage. Some side effects of the plant include dizziness, confusion, altered consciousness, irregular muscle action, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, and abnormal heart rhythm when consumed in large amounts or for extended cycles. If you notice any of these symptoms, discontinue use and contact your physician. Passionflower is not recommended for pregnant women since it contains chemicals which may cause contractions of the uterus. It should also not be used if you are breastfeeding since there is not enough research to determine how safe it is for infants. If you are taking medication for high blood pressure or are taking CNS (Central Nervous System) depressants, or if you plan to take anesthesia for an upcoming surgery, do not consume Passionflower since it may alter the effects of these medications. Passionflower should also be avoided by individuals that have low blood pressure, since the anti-hypertensive activity of Passionflower may drop blood pressure levels to dangerously lower levels.

Where and How to Buy Passionflower

Passionflower is available in herbal food stores and online herbal websites in the form of tablets, capsules, tea bags or liquid extracts. When purchasing Passionflower products, make sure to check that the product is organic and is prepared using Passiflora incarnata/maypop, since this particular species of the plant is the most popular and best understood species from a health perspective.

Oil of Oregano can be applied directly onto the skin to treat itches, skin infections, and irritated gums, but only if it has been diluted. Digestive Problems

The high concentrations of thymol and carvacrol in Oil of Oregano have been shown to calm upset stomachs and aid digestion. Therefore, a quick home remedy for mild indigestion is to drink a glass of milk or juice that is mixed with 2 or 3 drops of the oil.

Oil of Oregano is a wonderful natural remedy for sinus congestion. A common solution is to add 3 drops of the oil into a glass of juice and drink this mixture daily for 3 to 5 days.

Colds and Sore Throats

Oil of Oregano is an excellent early defense mechanism when you feel a cold or sore throat coming on. Simply take 3 drops of the oil once per day (you can mix it into a glass of orange juice) and you should notice results within a few hours. Repeat this once per day for up to 5 days until the symptoms are gone.

What are the Side Effects?

While Oil of Oregano has many benefits, there are a few possible side effects:
  • It may reduce the body's ability to absorb iron. Therefore, it is recommended that any regular use be combined with regular consumption of iron supplements. For this reason, women are advised not to take this oil during their pregnancy.
  • Pregnant women should also avoid this oil since it can stimulate blood flow in the uterus, which can weaken the lining that surrounds the fetus in the womb.

What is Licorice Root?

Health Benefits of Licorice Root Licorice root (also liquorice root) is the root and underground stems of an herbaceous perennial plant Glycyrrhiza glabra. Greek, Egyptians, Chinese and other Asian nations have been using Licorice root for flavouring, confectionery applications and medicinal purposes for centuries. However, studies suggest that along with its a slew of health benefits a key compound in Licorice Root, glycyrrhizic acid, may raise blood pressure levels when used in large quantities on regular basis. Therefore, processed Licorice Root is also available that does not contain glycyrrhizic acid and can be found under the label of Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice Root (DGL root).

Simple remedy for shingles, herpes simplex and old sores is to take one capsule of Licorice Root extract twice daily and apply Licorice Root extract gel or ointment on to the affected area 4 to 5 times daily.

Sore Throat and Cough
