What Is Starch Topical

Starch rectal is used to relieve itching, irritation, burning, or discomfort caused by hemorrhoids.
This medicine will not treat or cure a hemorrhoid, it will only relieve the symptoms.
Starch rectal may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Follow all directions on your medicine label and package. Tell each of your healthcare providers about all your medical conditions, allergies, and all medicines you use.
You should not use this medication if you are allergic to starch.
Ask a doctor or pharmacist if it is safe for you to take this medicine if you have any rectal bleeding.
It is not known whether starch rectal will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while using this medication.
It is not known whether starch rectal passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
Do not give this medicine to a child younger than 12 years old without medical advice.

Starch Topical Side Effects

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Stop using starch rectal and call your doctor at once if you have:

• bloody diarrhea; or
• severe rectal pain, bleeding, or irritation.

Starch Topical Interactions

Follow your doctor's instructions about any restrictions on food, beverages, or activity.
It is not likely that other drugs you take orally or inject will have an effect on starch rectal used in the rectum. But many drugs can interact with each other. Tell each of your health care providers about all medicines you use, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

Starch Topical Dosage

Use exactly as directed on the label, or as prescribed by your doctor. Do not use in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.
This medication comes with patient instructions for safe and effective use. Follow these directions carefully. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.
Do not take a rectal suppository by mouth. It is for use only in your rectum.
Wash your hands before and after inserting the rectal suppository.
Try to empty your bowel and bladder just before using the starch rectal suppository.
Remove the wrapper before inserting the suppository. Avoid handling the suppository too long or it will melt in your hands. You may wet the suppository with a small amount of water to make it easier to insert.
Lie on your back with your knees up toward your chest. Gently insert the suppository into your rectum about 1 inch, pointed tip first.
For best results, stay lying down for about 15 minutes. The suppository will melt quickly and you should feel little or no discomfort while holding it in. Avoid using the bathroom for at least an hour after using the suppository.
Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after 7 days of treatment, or if they get worse while using starch rectal.
Store the suppositories at cool room temperature away from moisture and heat.
You may store the suppositories in the refrigerator, but do not freeze.
An overdose of starch rectal is not expected to be dangerous.
Since starch rectal is used on an as needed basis, you are not likely to miss a dose.
